QUARTERBACKS
SCOUTING REPORTS
If you're a quarterback, you want everything on your shoulders. You want to be the one to make the decisions.
-Tom Brady

QB ARCHETYPES
Here at NFL Scout 247 we break the QB position into 4 Archetypes:
-
1. GAME MANAGER: Makes good decisions and gets the ball to his playmakers
-
2. POCKET PASSER: Stand in the pocket and deliver accurate throws, not mobile
-
3. GUN SLINGER: Big arm and a little reckless, will make big plays and higher INTs
-
4. DUAL THREAT: QB that can utilize both their arm and leg; 2 subtypes
-
A):True Dual Threat that can tuck and run, has designed QB runs, and scrambles
-
B): Improviser has the ability to extend plays outside the pocket rather than run

2025 NFL QB PROSPECTS

QB1/ CAM WARD/ MIAMI/ 6”2/ 223 LBS/ MID 1ST
Pros: Improviser, progressions, off platform, precision, 3 level passer, thick
Cons: Really low release, inaccuracy issues, decision making, holding onto ball long, dangerous throws, lack of competition

Comparison: Jameis Winston

Archetype: Dual Threat B (Improviser)
Scouting Report: After watching his film there’s a lot to like about him as a prospect. He goes through his progressions at a pro level rate, he can deliver the ball with precision, he can throw the ball off different platforms and flashes the ability to extend plays outside the pocket as an improviser. Ward is not without his flaws as I noticed he has some mechanical issues throwing low, he can be inconsistent with his accuracy, has a tendency to hold onto the ball too long, and his decision making is not always the best. He isn’t as good as the top 5 prospects from last year, but he is still a mid 1st round talent and my best QB available this year.

QB2/ WILL HOWARD/ OHIO STATE/ 6"4/ 235 LBS/ MID 1ST
Pros: height, gets ball out quick, pocket movement, precision, accuracy, rhythm thrower

Cons: Arm strength, decision making,

Comparison: Phillip Rivers

Archetype: Game Manager

Scouting Report: Going into his film I was sceptical…Will Howard was surrounded by amazing talent at WR, RB and OL. And yet, his ability to efficiently run an NFL style offense caught my eye. Yeah he’s a ‘game manager’, but he also has the ability to occasionally run the ball to get 1st downs. His arm isn't very strong, but it sure is accurate and precise. His progressions are good, but I would like to see him caught down on the turnovers and stay within his ability of trying to make plays at times. But Will Howard is a winner and I think this weak QB class is just the thing for him to solidify himself as the 2nd best QB prospect and a top 15 pick…yeah I said it. I might be wrong, but I see Phillip Rivers 2.0 when he plays… special

QB3/ JAXSON DART/ OLE MISS/ 6"2/ 225 LBS/ LATE 1ST
Pros: Relaxed in the pocket, solid arm, good athlete, competitor, mentally tough,
Cons: Struggles with blitz, holds onto ball, footwork, minor injuries,
Comparison: JJ McCarthy

Archetype: Dual Threat B (Improviser)
Scouting Report: Jaxson Dart is a QB prospect that shows flashes of capable NFL play with throws and with the use of his legs. He appears relaxed in the pocket, has a solid arm, is a good athlete and has the intangibles you look for in a QB. However he struggles with the blitz, appears to struggle in crunch time, bad decision making and holding onto the football lead to negative plays at times. Watching his film, I wasn’t overwhelmed, but after finishing his grading, he is my 3rd highest graded QB in this class draft. He has some potential and his play reminds me of a more aggressive version of JJ McCarthy, who I had as a day two pick, but Jaxson Dart projects well as a late 1st round pick

QB4/ DILLON GABRIEL/ OREGON/ 6"0/ 200 LBS/ MID 2ND
Pros: Progressions, check down, pocket mover, good decisions, athleticism,
Cons: Age, height, injuries/durability, played at 3 different schools, miss fires,
Comparison: Russell Wilson

Archetype: Game Manager
Scouting Report: After 6 seasons in college, Dillon Gabriel has the most experience playing QB in college in this draft. He does a good job operating in the system, making the right throws to his playmakers, and extending the plays with his legs when the play breaks down. He has his flaws; his height, weight, age, and injury history are reasonable concerns along with his inconsistent play at times. Despite these concerns I liked how he operated the offense and can see it translating as a game manager type In the NFL. If he was 6”2 and 2 years younger he would be higher on peoples draft boards. Sleeper Diamond in rough player.

QB5/ SHEDEUR SANDERS/ COLORADO/ 6"2/ 215 LBS/ LATE 2ND
Pros: Arm talent, accuracy, competitor, well coached, progressions, tough,

Cons: Pass drop, pocket presence, back foot throws, sloppy footwork,
Comparison: Geno Smith

Archetype: Pocket Passer
Scouting Report: Shedeur Sanders plays with a lot of confidence like his Hall fame Dad and CU Coach Deion Sanders used to. Sanders has a great arm and is able to accurately put the ball on his receivers. He has good mechanics and can go through progressions when he has time. His lower body is the issue as his film suggests lazy footwork at times and his inability to escape the pocket and avoid sacks is a glaring issue, however his poor OL play is partly to blame. I think Sanders has potential to be a viable QB and can grow behind a veteran QB and a good pass blocking offense for a year, but he is not pro ready right now. He can handle the spotlight, but will his personality be a distraction?

QB6 KYLE MCCORD/ SYRACUSE/ 6"3/ 220 LBS/ GUNSLINGER/ LATE 2ND
Pros: Quick release, precision

Cons: Inaccuracy, reading defenses, decision making

Comparison: Baker Mayfield

Archetype: Gunslinger

Scouting Report: Kyle McCord is not afraid to throw the ball 50 times a game. He has good mechanical releases, but is able to throw off the platform as well. He can fit the ball into tight window coverage and his ability to move and extend plays is evident on film. He can be really good, but his decision making has led to a high number of turnovers. His inaccuracy is inconsistent, and his mental IQ of the game feels low. I think Kyle McCord shows flashes of good QB play, but not a consistent enough basis to be considered a top QB prospect in this relatively weak class. He falls in the Late 2nd round, but I feel like that was a generous grade as I am not high on him as a prospect.

QB7/ QUINN EWERS/ TEXAS/ 6"2/ 210 LBS/ LATE 2ND
Pros: Touch, athleticism, off platform throws, pocket movement, footwork

Cons: Light weight, reading defenses, accuracy, decision making

Comparison: Zach Wilson

Archetype: Dual Threat B (improviser)

Scouting Report: Quinn Ewers is an interesting QB prospect. He has had tremendous success at Texas and looks to continue that at the NFL level. He has a solid arm that is able to put the ball where only the receiver can get it and has the athletic ability, footwork, and pocket movement to evade tackles and improvise when the play breaks down. He doesn’t have the strongest arm, his accuracy is inconsistent and his ability to read defense is questionable. Overall I like him, but I do not love him as a QB prospect. He isn't the best passer in the draft, but he makes up for it with other traits like his athleticism and playmaking. I don’t think he is QB ready either and may need a year of development.

QB8/ JALEN MILROE/ BAMA/ 6"2/ 225 LBS/ EARLY 3RD
Pros: Athlete, playmaking, speed, leadership,

Cons: Pocket presence, turnovers, mechanics, inconsistent

Comparison: Jalen Hurts

Archetype: Dual Threat A (scrambler)

Scouting Report: Jalen Milroe might be the most intriguing QB prospect this year. His athleticism and speed alone make him one of the most dynamic players on the board. He is a solid 6”2, but his muscular frame allows him to absorb contact as a runner. He’s also a good leader and great personality to have in the locker room based on interviews. While not a polished passer, he has shown some promise in the pass game as well. His struggles come from holding onto the ball too long and trying to make a play which results in turnover. He has a high ceiling, but needs to be put into the right situation to grow as a NFL passer. He is a boom or bust kind of player that projects as an early 3rd, maybe late 2nd.

QB9/ RILEY LEONARD/ NOTREDAME/ 6"4/ 214 LBS/ MID 3RD
Pros: Height, pocket movement, athleticism, toughness,

Cons: Skittish in the pocket, no good under pressure, inaccuracy, command

Comparison: Daniel Jones

Archetype: Dual Threat A (Scrambler)
Scouting Report: Riley Leonard is a very likable player on and off the field. He transferred to Notre Dame and is having great success within the system. From a scouting standpoint he has good height, athleticism, and is both physically and mentally tough as a runner. He has inaccurate concerns, can be quick to leave the pocket, struggles under pressure and lacks the command you look for at the next level. Despite these concerns, NFL scouts will like him as a leader whose skill sets show promise as a modern QB that can run and throw effectively. He might not be ready on day 1, but he shows promise in the right system as a day two developmental prospect.

QB10/ KURTIS ROURKE/ INDIANA/ 6"5/ 223 LBS/ LATE 3RD
Pros: Height, anticipates his throws, mechanics, footwork, pocket movement,
Cons: Age, thumb surgery, pocket presence, reading defenses, improvise,

Comparison: Tanner McKee

Archetype: Pocket Passer

Scouting Report: Kurtis Rourke has some good qualities that NFL scouts look for including; a good leader, his towering height, anticipatory throws, good mechanical delivery of football and polished footwork. Unfortunately Rourkes less than desirable traits or lack there of modern NFL QBs like; dense injury history, below average athlete, struggles to read Defenses and lacks ability to improvise outside of the pocket. He has some flashes of good play, but given his older age, immobility, and twice torn ACL (and potential surgery), I have a hard time seeing Rourke ceiling being higher than a backup QB, but a practice squad is more likely.
